Harry, when I did ctrl+click (Mac) and selected "Show in folder in library" (show in catalog was not an option), they did appear in my catalog so I guess they all did import fine. They were definitely not already in my catalog, as I have only used Lightroom for new shots with my new DSLR and had never imported old photos taken years ago, on point and shoots. Thanks guys! I'm not sure what happened here. Have you checked they are definitely not in the catalogue? right click on the image in the folder and choose 'show in catalogue'
